The Hawker
Protocol
Singapore's hawker centers are legendary, but they have their own "unwritten laws." Follow these to eat like a pro (and avoid the "stare" from the expert diners).
The "Chope" (Tissue) Rule
See a pack of tissues on a table? Don't sit there. That table is "choped" (reserved) by a local who's currently queuing for food. It's a low-tech but highly respected reservation system. Pack your own tissues to join the game!
The Tray Return Law
It's not just polite; it's the law. Always return your used trays and crockery to the designated stations. First-time offenders can be fined up to $300 SGD, so keep the center clean and your wallet full!
Order Like a Pro
Keep it snappy! Know your order before reaching the front. Call the stall owners "Uncle" or "Auntie"to instantly gain 10+ charisma points. If you're not sure, just point at what the person in front is having—they usually know best.
