12 Hours in Singapore — The Complete Journey (MRT)

Transport: MRT · Vibe: The full Singapore experience · Pace: Steady

Twelve hours is a significant amount of time—enough to see Singapore's only UNESCO World Heritage site, immerse yourself in cultural districts, and end with the city's futuristic skyline. This MRT-based itinerary is the definitive guide for travellers who want to see every side of the Little Red Dot.

Departure from Changi

Take the MRT from Changi Airport. Travel to Tanah Merah, EW Line to Expo, then change to the Downtown Line (blue) toward Cluny. Get off at Botanic Gardens station. The journey takes about 50 minutes.

Stop 1 — Singapore Botanic Gardens (UNESCO Site)

Arrive: ~1h after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

As Singapore’s only UNESCO World Heritage site, the Botanic Gardens represent 160 years of tropical botanical history. Walk through the Swan Lake area and don't miss the National Orchid Garden, which houses the largest display of orchids in the world.

📸 Photo moment: The white bandstand or the vibrant hybrid orchids.

Stop 2 — Little India

Arrive: ~2h 40min after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

A short MRT hop on the Downtown Line brings you to Little India. Start at Tekka Centre for a traditional Indian breakfast or early lunch. The district is a sensory delight of spices, jasmine garlands, and colourful shophouses.

💡 Local tip: Try the "Teh Tarik" (pulled milk tea) at any of the market stalls — it is the quintessential market experience.

Stop 3 — Merlion Park & Marina Bay

Arrive: ~4h 20min after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour

Travel via the MRT to Raffles Place and walk to the Merlion. Standing on the bayfront, you’ll see the full scale of modern Singapore: the Marina Bay Sands hotel, the ArtScience Museum, and the expansive harbour.

Stop 4 — Gardens by the Bay

Arrive: ~5h 40min after leaving Changi · Duration: 3 hours

The afternoon belongs to the Gardens. Explore the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, and the Supertree Grove. Since you have plenty of time, take it slow. If you arrive in the late afternoon, stay for the Supertree light show at 7:45 PM.

📸 Photo moment: The 35-metre indoor waterfall at the Cloud Forest.

Stop 5 — The Jewel Final Hour

Arrive: ~9h 30min after leaving Changi · Duration: 1.5 hours

Return to Changi. The 12-hour layover is perfectly capped by the HSBC Rain Vortex. With over 90 minutes here, you can explore the Canopy Park on Level 5 or enjoy a final meal at the Jewel food hall before clearing security.
