8 Hours in Singapore — The Ultimate Foodie Trail (Grab)

Transport: Grab · Vibe: Hawker masterclass & cultural deep-dive · Pace: Food-Focus

Eight hours and a Grab account allow you to bypass the lines and head straight for the iconic food neighbourhoods. This itinerary takes you from the historic Old Airport Road to the Peranakan heart of Katong, ending with an evening satay feast at Newton — the very hawker centre featured in Crazy Rich Asians.

Leaving Changi

Take a Grab from the "Arrival Pick-up" point. It’s a 15-minute ride to your first stop at Old Airport Road, putting you in the heart of the city's food culture faster than the MRT.

Stop 1 — Old Airport Road Food Centre

Arrive: ~30 min after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

This is widely considered by locals to be the best hawker centre in Singapore. The density of high-quality stalls is unmatched. Try the Lor Mee (thick gravy noodles) or the Kway Chap. It is loud, hot, and absolutely authentic.

📸 Photo moment: A tray of diverse hawker dishes sitting on the red or blue plastic tables.

Stop 2 — Peranakan Flavours in Katong

Arrive: ~1h 55min after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

A 10-minute Grab ride takes you to Katong/Joo Chiat. This was the historical enclave of the Peranakan (Straits Chinese) community. After photographing the famous pastel-coloured shophouses on Koon Seng Road, sit down for a bowl of 328 Katong Laksa.

Stop 3 — Newton Food Centre (Evening Feast)

Arrive: ~3h 40min after leaving Changi · Duration: 2 hours

A 15-minute Grab ride brings you to the world-famous Newton Food Centre. This is the place for Chilli Crab, Cereal Prawns, and the legendary Satay. The outdoor setting under the trees makes it the quintessential Singapore dinner experience.

📸 Photo moment: The smoke from the satay grills under the night lights.

Stop 4 — Dessert at Jewel

Arrive: ~6h after leaving Changi · Duration: 1 hour

Return to the airport and spend your final hour at Jewel. Head to the basement for Birds of Paradise Gelato or a final Durian snack before catching the hourly light show at the Rain Vortex.

Why this stop

Hawker Masterclass — Old Airport Road Food Centre earns its slot because it gives you a Singapore food hit without turning the whole layover into a restaurant hunt.

If time gets tight, cap this at 45 minutes and protect the return-to-airport buffer.

Tourist trap warning

The common trap is over-staying for photos. Get the moment, then move before the buffer disappears.

Cheaper alternative

Cheaper move: set a hard spend cap here and save the paid splurge for the stop that matters most to you.
